Should You Buy Prefold Cloth Diapers?
Prefold cloth diapers are diapers that are already folded to their best advantage for fit and duty. They are made from different types of fabrics, mostly gauze cotton or organic cotton. Also you can buy hemp or bamboo ones and some are even twill. Each fabric has advantages. A Chinese prefold is very durable, yet takes several washings in hot water to soften up. The Indian prefold diapers are comfortable, absorbent and quick drying from the start, but may fray or wear out more quickly than some other kinds. Aside of these considerations, each of these diapers keep the baby dry for a reasonable length of time.
You can use two diapers for overnight protection. There are special pins for prefold diapers called Snappies, with three loops that join together in the front to fasten the prefold diaper. You can use regular pins, too. If you don’t want to struggle with pins you can purchase special diaper covers that do not require pins. Some people prefer the added security of fasteners even when not necessary, while others are happy to simply place the diaper in the special pant.
The diaper cover (pant) that is used with prefold diapers is called a Bummi. You can place the diaper in the cover and put the diaper in its cover on the baby and then fasten the Velcro strips on the front of the diaper cover to secure it onto the baby. Another diaper cover that can be used with prefolds is called Flip. The diaper covers come in colors, prints, fleece and organic wool. Prices for covers start at $8.95 each and prices for the prefold diapers start at $1.50 each. A lot of people buy two or three covers per each size range. Size ranges include; newborn for babies 4 to 9 lbs., small for 11 to 17 lbs., medium for 15 to 22 lbs. and large for 20 to 26 lbs. It is suggested that a person planning to use all prefolds to diaper their baby should buy 12 diapers for newborns and 8 diapers for older babies.
Two places to find many or all of the above products available for purchase are CottonBabies.com and TheBabyMarketPlace.com. Another maker or provider of prefolds is Gerber. Gerber diapers are sold at Toys-R-Us, in a gauze weave fabric and are economical at $10.99 for 12. Don’t forget the diaper pail and some deodorant disks for it. Deodorant disks are about $1.00 each and worth every penny as they work well to prevent odors and leave a fresh scent. Visit prefold cloth diapers or baby monitors for further information.
